From England to Germany by Bike

Summer 2007

It all began with a somewhat random idea, by friends often described as totally crazy, mad, weird, nuts, insane and simply unrealistic. ‘You want to cycle all the way from Plymouth to Germany? There is no chance you’re gonna to make it!’ To me it sounded like a great idea. I just finished my BA in Youth & Community Work in Plymouth, saved up some money for the summer, had plenty of time until September - the beginning of my MA in Development Studies in Norwich, felt like I deserved a holiday and needed some time to reflect, read and write, and simply wanted to spend some quality time with friends in the UK as well as back in Germany. On the other hand, having embraced the minimax principle as a laureate and quasi-student of business economics, I wanted to spend as little money for the best experience as possible, whilst at the same time sticking to my ethos as a Green Party candidate and keeping my carbon footprint to an absolute minimum ...
